Byblos Festival 2019: DJ Martin Garrix and Queen Symphonic to perform

One of Lebanon’s biggest music events has announced its headliners.

EDM superstar Martin Garrix, Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Lebanese crooner Melhem Zein are some of the artists performing as part of the annual Byblos Music Festival, which takes place from July 12 to August 24.

Held at the Unesco World Heritage-listed city of Byblos, also known as Jbeil (an hour’s drive from the capital of Beirut), the festival is renowned for its eclectic line-ups and as a major tourism magnet.

Other acts booked to play at the festival include French crooner Marc Lavoine, the orchestra rock spectacle Queen Symphonic, Lebanese indie music giants Mashrou' Leila and Dutch symphonic metal group Within Temptation.

With the festival spread over six weeks, each weekend will see a performance by one of the headliners.

Marc Lavoine

The Parisian singer Lavoine will open the festival on July 12 with a greatest-hits set exploring his three-decade career. Expected crowd favourites include Pour une Biguine Avec Toi, Les Yeux Revolver and Bascule Avec Moi.

Queen Symphonic

July 20 will see an epic show by Queen Symphonic. Created by Queen guitarist Brian May and produced by the BBC, the concert will feature numerous singers and the band from the hit musical We Will Rock You performing Queen hits accompanied by a symphony orchestra.

Melhem Zein and Charbel Rouhana

On July 26, Melhem Zein will team up with fellow Lebanese singer and master oudist Charbel Rouhana to debut a new project, which has the pair performing traditional Andalusian Arabic songs that trace a path from Byblos to Seville.

Martin Garrix

Garrix will bring his brand of high energy electronic-dance anthems to the city on August 3. His set will undoubtedly include his latest single, Summer Days, which features rapper Macklemore and singer Patrick Stump from pop-punk group Fall Out Boy.

Within Temptation

Dutch symphonic group Within Temptation will return to Lebanon on August 7 with their powerful live show featuring songs from their latest album Resist.

Mashrou' Leila

Another band with new tunes to play is Mashrou’ Leila. After wowing crowds at Dubai's Wasla festival last month, they return home with a fistful of new songs from their latest release Beirut School.

Yo-Yo Ma

The festival will come to close on August 26 with a performance by one of the world's greatest cellists. Yo-Yo Ma's Lebanese stop is part of new world tour, which has him performing Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello.
