Head of the Kataeb's Economic and Social Council Jean Tawile on Sunday deemed the 2019 draft budget approved by the government as disappointing, saying that it is merely aimed at satisfying the international community in order to unlock the CEDRE funds.
In an interview on Voice of Lebanon radio station, Tawile saying that the budget was expected to bring forward serious reforms to reduce the deficit in a sustainable way without harming the economic growth.
“But instead, we were surprised to see a budget whose only goal is to appease the international community,” Tawile said.
“The budget figures are very optimistic, whereas there is a big difference between the estimated numbers and the real ones. For instance, revenues cannot increase by 16.5% while we are living amid an economic crisis,” he explained.
“We cannot expect a growth of 1.2% while we are experiencing an economic recession."
