Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Thursday renewed his call for holding early parliamentary elections, deeming such step as the main solution so as to overcome the problems prevailing over the country.
“According to the Lebanese statistics, 50% of the Lebanese citizens will not vote for the same lawmakers they have voted for in the last parliamentary polls," Gemayel said during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Saifi.
“We are facing a political cartel that has put us in a closed box; one part trying to dominate and another one trying to float itself after the country was destroyed and isolated,” he pointed out.
“The cartel which is the main reason behind the economic, financial and social collapse in the country is controlling the majority of the power today and owns 90% of the Parliament,” he added.
“It is divided into two parts: A part that is in the government and another part that is outside."
Gemayel stressed that any economic plan is not valid without a financial support for Lebanon, affirming that the country will receive no international aids as long as Hezbollah is controlling the State.
“On one hand they want to carry out economic reforms and rearrange the Lebanese economy and at the same time they cannot appoint lawmakers of the Bank of Lebanon Governor and a monitoring committee on banks,” he said.
“The issue of the Capital Control was submitted by the government and then withdrawn. How do you talk about judicial reform, fighting corruption and liberating the Judiciary from political influence if you are unable to make the appointments needed?” he asked.
Gemayel accused the government of lack of vision and misjudgment of the current phase, saying it is not allowed for anyone to send a numerical and mathematical plan if he doesn’t set a comprehensive socio-economic vision.
“The goal must be determined and then present a digital plan,” he said.
“The plan was supposed to be established in partnership with all the society components who will be partners in the application such as unions, merchants and industrialists,” he added.
“According to all economic experts, there is no country in the world that can raise the Capital Control after a year,” he pointed out.
The Kataeb leader called on the Lebanese citizens to renew the Ocotber 17 Revolution as soon the health crisis ends, urging them to stand together the way they did during the revolution.
