Washington has allowed human bodies to be composted rather than being buried or cremated, thus becoming the first U.S. state to permit such a method.
The new law, signed by Governor Jay Inslee, permits certified facilities to offer "natural organic reduction", according to which a body would be turned into soil by mixing it with substances.
The procedure based on "livestock composting" has been used by farmers for many years.
