Iranian Foreign Ministry on Monday condemned the United Kingdom's decision to label Hezbollah as a terrorist group, saying that London has committed a strategic mistake that mirrors the depth of its misunderstanding of regional issues.
“Hezbollah is a resistance, legal and official force which has struggled to support the Lebanese people and the country’s independence and territorial integrity,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi, adding that Britain is not paying serious attention to establishing peace and security in the region.
“Hezbollah, like many freedom fighters and those who are trying to bring independence and security to the region, has made great sacrifices in the fight against terrorists and Takfiri groups and is very popular in Lebanon and other countries of the region,” he noted.
“The UK’s move is unfathomable and seems like it is following the same double standards that have led to insecurity, instability and extremism across the region,” he added.
“Hezbollah also plays a crucial role in Lebanese government, as a number of the country’s ministers and lawmakers are from Hezbollah which is a legal, official and recognized party,” he said.
