Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati appeared Tuesday to be racing against time in his endeavor to form a new government within the one-month deadline he reportedly set for himself since his designation last month that expires this week.
“Efforts have been intensified in the past few days with the aim of resolving all hurdles blocking the government formation before Mikati’s presumed deadline expires Thursday Aug. 26,” a political source familiar with the matter told The Daily Star.
Media reports said Mikati considered this week to be “decisive” with regard to reaching an agreement with President Michel Aoun on a Cabinet lineup, or else he would announce his decision to step down.
