Al-Rahi Deems Parliamentary Elections as a Right and a Duty

Maronite Patriarch Bechara al Rahi on Sunday renewed his call for the judiciary to be neutralized from any politicization, wondering about the ongoing delay occurring about the investigation into the Beirut port explosion.

“Some of judges reinforce the suspicion of the judiciary through their participation in obstructing the investigation into the port explosion,” Al-Rahi said during Sunday sermon.

"The parliamentary elections should be held on their constitutional date. They are not a routine entitlement, but rather a date with the change expected from the people, and that it is a right and a duty in our democratic system,” he added.

“Our keenness is accompanied by an eagerness that the elections take place under the supervision of the United Nations to ensure freedom of candidacy, the security of candidates, the integrity of the elections and the control of financial spending,” he concluded.
