Kataeb leader Samy Gemayel on Monday accused the mafia and militia alliance of the country’s current and ongoing collapse, saying that such alliance has committed many major crimes against the Lebanese people.
“This alliance has handed over the country’s sovereignty to be run from abroad by the presence of an armed militia on its territories, has also committed financial crimes and has caused the Beirut port explosion,” Gemayel said during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Saifi.
“What we are currently experiencing is an attempt carried out by the mafia and the militia to escape responsibility and accountability,” he added.
Gemayel stressed that there is no change without sovereignty as well as there is no sovereignty without change, calling for a national confrontation with a cross-sectarian discourse that emphasizes the need for Hezbollah to surrender its weapons, abide by the Constitution and let the Lebanese live a civilized and developed life.
“We will be exerting our utmost efforts to offer the Lebanese people a serious, sovereign, national and change option,” he noted.
Gemayel slammed the ongoing obstruction taking place regarding the Beirut port explosion and against the investigation of judge Tarek Bitar, deeming it as very dangerous.
“What we are witnessing today is a constitutional violation, as it is forbidden for the executive authority to interfere in the affairs of the judiciary in respect of the principle of separation of powers,” he said.
“The entire judicial body is in solidarity with Judge Bitar,” he affirmed, deeming what is happening as an infringement by the executive and legislative authority on the judiciary and a coup against the Constitution,” he noted.
The Kataeb leader called for adopting the policy of capital control, saying that a comprehensive plan needs to be agreed on with along with the World Bank.
"The Lebanese are subjected to organized crime. As a Lebanese party, we have one obsession which is defending the country and its people,” he said.
